French tourist Fabio di Petrantonio’s plans to kayak through the glacier region came to a sad end Friday afternoon, when his kayak overturned in Canal Beagle. The 32-year-old died from hypothermia.
Bad weather was to blame. Waves overturned the kayak, di Petrantonio fell into the water, and was dead when his traveling companion, Williams Odot, 37, found him.
The Chilean navy, alerted by satellite telephone, picked up di Petrantonio and Odot and took them to Puerto Williams, where Odot was hospitalized. On Saturday, Puerto Williams authorities began working with the French consulate to return di Petrantonio’s body to France.
